Angel (エンジェル Enjeru?) is the Angel Devil (
Appearance[]
Angel resembles a young, androgynous male, and is always seen wearing the Public Safety suit. He has shoulder-length hair—depicted as red, the color may either specifically be known as "giant's club" in the official colored manga or "japonica" in the anime—with a halo floating above it and white wings on his upper back. After the events of the International Assassins arc, Angel loses both of his arms.
Personality[]
The Angel Devil is a unique case among devils, having virtually no hostility towards humans.[2] He considers himself to be a devil first and an angel second, stating that he believes humans ought to die in pain.[3] However, he is later seen apologizing to and comforting certain humans in their deaths, suggesting some form of affection towards humans, which he suggests is a result of being part-Angel.
He dislikes being ordered around and seems to have an aversion to combat, preferring to move an unconscious enemy outside than carry on fighting.[4] His extreme laziness holds him back from being the strong fighter he actually is and he often refuses to work, even claiming to prefer dying to working.[5] When pressed to fight, he shows some reluctance at having to use his abilities and apologizes to the people whose lifespan he has stolen when he uses their lifespan to create weapons.[6]
As a result of his power, the Angel Devil is socially withdrawn and usually is seen isolated from the rest of his fellow devil hunters, with Aki Hayakawa being the only one who has a sort of connection with him as he is the first known human who has not been afraid of touching him.
He is partial to soft-serve ice cream, eating three cones in one sitting and requesting another, but has shown a willingness to eat anything including zombie flesh and the corpse of a fellow devil.[5][2][7]
Angel initially only wishes to die so he wouldn't have to work again, saying that he's always been prepared for the moment he dies. However, over the course of the story, Angel slowly starts to reject that notion and eventually desires to have a normal life like an ordinary human, even telling Aki that he wishes that he would quit his job as a Public Safety Devil Hunter and find another job that would allow him live a long and peaceful life. He also grows to care about his partner, becoming concerned when Makima forces Aki to make a contract with her and attempts to protect Aki from her.
Abilities[]
As a Devil, Angel possesses all of the standard devil abilities. In addition, he is distinguished by his unique power to absorb lifespans with a simple touch, which he can then materialize into weapons, and is thus considered quite dangerous. In fact, Angel is referred to by Makima to be Tokyo Special Division 4's second-strongest agent after Captain Kishibe, though his laziness holds him back.[8]
Physical Prowess[]
- Enhanced Reflexes: Angel has superhuman reflexes, being fast enough to block bullets with his wings[9] and react to Quanxi's immense speed, albeit just barely.[10]
Supernatural Abilities[]
- Angelic Wings: The Angel Devil has a pair of angelic, white-feathered wings on his back. They are tough enough to deflect gunfire and can be used as impromptu shields, though bullets are still enough to cause Angel pain.[9] It is unknown if he can fly using the wings.
- Lifespan Absorption (
寿 命 を吸 い取 られる Jumyō o Suitorareru?): The Angel Devil can siphon off the lifespan of humans by touching them and store it within himself;[2][11] however, direct skin-to-skin contact is needed (if any material breaks contact, like cloth, one is safe from the effect).[12] If Angel touches a victim long enough they will die painlessly;[3] after Aki briefly grabbed his hand, Angel estimated that Aki's lifespan had decreased by two months.[13]
"Usage: 1,000 Years" is used by Makima against the Chainsaw Man.
- Lifespan Weapons (
寿 命 武 器 Jumyō Buki?):[14] The Angel Devil can convert previously absorbed lifespan (measured in years) into physical weapons, which he summons forth through his halo. These weapons hold unique powers, such as Aki's katana that can cut through a normally intangible ghost.[15][11] Due to his nightmares about the people whose lifespans he stole, Angel is hesitant to use this ability frequently.- Spears: Angel was seen creating two particular throwing spears with his power and using them to impale Reze: one dark with a barbed shaft and a second, light-colored javelin.[16]
- Usage: Five Years (
五 年 使 用 Gonen Shiyō?): By using up five years of collected lifespan, the Angel Devil can manifest a gold-handled, single-edged sword from his halo that seems to instantly kill whomever he cuts with it, without leaving a scratch (possibly by draining a victim's lifespan all at once).[17] - Usage: Ten Years (10
年 使 用 Jūnen Shiyō?): By using up ten years worth of collected lifespan, the Angel Devil can manifest a single-edged sword with a crossguard from his halo. Its power remains unknown because, when Angel tried using it on Makima, she instantly rendered him powerless by ordering him to fall to the ground.[18] - Usage: 100 Years (100
年 使 用 Hyakunen Shiyō?): By expending a hundred years of gathered lifespan, the Angel Devil can manifest a single-edged, red-hilted, cleaver-like longsword from his halo. It was created by Makima (through her intestinal halo) while she was controlling Angel, in an attempt to counter Power's blood weapons.[19] - Usage: 1,000 Years (
千 年 使 用 Sennen Shiyō?): From 1000 years of lifespan, the Angel can manifest a massive, blood-red spear. It was brought forth by Makima (through her intestinal halo) while controlling Angel and used against Chainsaw Man. Makima shot this spear through some sort of black, starlit portal propped up by three golden, humanoid effigies that were floating in the air, arms spread. The spear proved strong enough to run through and defeat the Chainsaw Devil while he was weakened from the rapid decline of humanity's fear of him.[20]
Skillset[]
- Spearmanship: The Angel Devil is skilled at using spears in combat, accurately throwing two to impale Reze from a nearby rooftop.[16]
- Swordsmanship: The Angel Devil can wield a sword with some skill, cutting down five of Santa Claus' dolls in a single swing.[21]

Trivia[]
- Angel Devil's appearance is based on the lowest classifications of angels, which are the most commonly depicted angels in classic paintings from the medieval and Renaissance times.
- Angel also resembles Lucifer as depicted in the painting "The Fallen Angel" by Alexandre Cabanel. Aside from both having auburn hair, Lucifer is commonly described as beautiful. Denji found Angel attractive enough to briefly consider him a potential partner before discarding the idea since Angel is male.
- It is possible that Angel's ability to steal and weaponize lifespans could be because sometimes angels are symbolic of or associated with death, dead beings, or seen when dying.
- He is one of the followers of Chainsaw Man. Other followers of Chainsaw Man were Power, Beam, Galgali, Princi, Seraphim, Dominion and Virtue.
- Angel Devil's rankings in the Popularity Polls are as follows:
- Angel ranked 6th in the First Popularity Poll with 13,374 votes.
- Angel ranked 7th in the Second Popularity Poll with 27,761 votes.
- Angel Devil's death was confirmed in an interview with Tatsuki Fujimoto.[22] It was also the result of Fujimoto letting his editor, Shihei Lin, decide who should die between Kobeni and the Angel Devil. Lin had picked Kobeni to die, as he did not want Angel to suffer that fate. Fujimoto then assumed that if the readers did not want Angel to die, then he should perhaps truly kill him off.
