Synopsis[]
History[]
At some point in his life, Barem became a Hybrid upon merging with the Flamethrower Devil. He would later fall under Makima's control after being brainwashed and mind-controlled by her. Unlike the others under Makima's control, Barem was willing to carry out Makima's plans for a peacefully controlled world.[1]
Public Safety Saga[]
Control Devil arc[]

Barem blows up an entire building using his flamethrowers.
Barem is summoned as part of Makima's newly-formed Special Division 5, a team of weapon hybrids created for the sole purpose of battling the fully-powered Chainsaw Devil.[2] While under Makima's control, he comments about how everyone in the group adores Makima.
Once Makima commands Special Division 5 to attack, each member activates their weapon trigger, transforming into their Hybrid forms. They all leap from their respective spots to lunge straight towards Chainsaw Man. Before any of the Hybrids can land a single blow on him, they are all blown back by Chainsaw Man leaping forward from the building he stood on to initiate the fight.[3]
After Chainsaw Man beheads Katana Man inside a destroyed building, Barem appears on the bottom floor and aims his two flamethrowers at the ceiling. Screaming in excitement, he unleashes a large torrent of flames, creating a large explosion that forces Chainsaw Man to escape the building. He is eventually torn to shreds alongside the remaining Special Division 5 members after Chainsaw Man withstands their combined attack of sending him into space.[4]

"Denji" cuts Barem in half during his final confrontation with Makima.
At some point in the future, Special Division 5's Hybrids are revived once more by Makima, who brings them all to a graveyard to confront Denji.[5] Once Makima finishes monologuing her thoughts of erasing anything she dislikes to Pochita (who is disguised as Denji), Barem and the other Weapon Humans transform into their Hybrid forms for the final battle.[6]
During this confrontation, he attempts to incinerate Pochita when the latter is piled up by a group of zombies from the Zombie Devil. Unfortunately, Pochita uses his chain whips to latch onto two grave markers, and launches himself straight towards Makima's group. Unable to react in time, Barem is sliced in half by Pochita's chainsaw leg, which causes him to collapse.[7]
Sometime after Makima's demise, Barem was freed from her control and reverted back to his original personality. Despite experiencing a setback in bringing Makima's plans to fruition, Barem would plan to continue Makima's legacy while swearing vengeance on Denji for killing her.

Chainsaw Man Church arc[]
Several months later, Barem joins the Chainsaw Man Church alongside Miri Sugo, the Whip Hybrid, and the Spear Hybrid. Together, they form most of the church's top brass, with Barem serving as second-in-command of the cult. He eventually re-encounters Denji in the Chainsaw Man Church's headquarters. He orders Nobana Higashiyama, who was giving Denji a tour of the building alongside Miri, to return to his usual duties. He introduces himself to him and states that none of the Weapon Devils nor Denji remember the confrontation between Pochita and Makima, and that it is why they've already met each other even though they don't seem to reckon it.

Barem greets Denji inside the Chainsaw Man Church.
After pretending to lend his hand to him, Barem raises two fingers and put them both into Denji's nostrils for fun, displaying his twisted sense of humor. He then remarks that Chainsaw Man hasn't been active for the past few days and questions Denji if he would come back if Tokyo were to be attacked by a powerful Devil. The latter replies that the city would be out of trouble thanks to its Devil Hunters and Asa Mitaka.
After comically commenting on the relationship between Denji and her, Barem suddenly suggests in a serious tone to kill Asa in order to make Denji become Chainsaw Man once again. He asks him what Denji is more likely to between living a peaceful wonderful life with friends, family, Meowy and his dogs or transforming into Chainsaw Man. This disturbs Denji, who walks away from him and Miri in disgust because of what he just heard. Barem waves to him from afar, telling him that they'll see each other again and wishing him to enjoy his normal life while he still can, threatening Denji implicitly.[8]

Barem reveals his plans of causing a massacre to lure Chainsaw Man out.
A day after their failed attempt to recruit Denji, the Weapons discuss their plans of causing a large massacre at a Family Burger Restaurant. Barem reminds his fellow Weapons that as they are all born to kill, God will forgive them for such actions.[9] The following day, Barem sends his group to a nearby food court, while he manages to find Denji, Nayuta, and Fumiko Mifune at an amusement park. He greets Denji and Fumiko, expressing that he is a big Chainsaw Man fan, even showing off his Chainsaw Man lighter.
He informs the two that there will be an upcoming attack on the building's first floor.[10] However, this attack is stopped by Public Safety sending some of its members to subdue the church.[11][12] Barem is then taken in custody by Public Safety agents, who escort him away from the chaos alongside Denji, Fumiko, and Nayuta.[13] However, Barem explains to the group the true intentions of the church, and states that the Devil Fami contracted the church's members with is the Fire Devil.
Barem continues explaining the Fire Devil's powers as people begin transforming into mindless faux Chainsaw Devils who begin wreaking havoc and destruction across Japan. These creatures also slaughter the agents holding Barem captive, leaving only Denji, Fumiko, and Nayuta alive. Once he is freed from custody, Barem reveals that in about half a year, "The Great King of Terror" will descend, and that he and Fami plan to kill the king to save humanity.[14]

Barem burns down Denji and Nayuta's apartment with Meowy and the dogs inside.
With that revealed, Barem mockingly applauds Nayuta for figuring out his and Fami's plan. He tells Denji he has to become "wild" again, refusing to let him back out from becoming Chainsaw Man. Barem suddenly yells out that based on a revelation from Chainsaw Man, Nayuta is a witch. He commands the army of Pseudo-Chainsaw People to kill her, only for Quanxi to intervene by decapitating them out of nowhere. A shocked Barem watches Quanxi escape with Denji's group by leaping off the building they were standing on.[15]
Barem decides to abandon his plan of killing Asa and instead burns down Denji's apartment with Meowy and the dogs inside. By the time Denji and Nayuta arrive, they witness their home burning to ashes. Denji rushes forward to save his pets, only for Barem to smugly trip him. The Flamethrower Hybrid proceeds to taunt Denji over being unable to save his pets from burning to death. Enraged, Denji attempts to transform but stops upon seeing Fumiko and Public Safety shooting Barem down.[16]

"These flames... are your punishment."
After the other Weapons arrive to aid him, Barem weakly gets up on his knees. Nayuta, enraged over the deaths of her pets, attempts to kill Barem using her abilities. However, Barem is revealed to be immune as he grabs Nayuta by the neck. He then blames Denji for "disrupting" Makima's promise of peace, and states that the flames are his punishment for Makima's demise. Before he can do anything else, Nayuta shoots out a chain at a Public Safety agent and orders him to shoot Barem once again, freeing her from his grasp.[17]
Despite the numerous gunshot wounds in his body, Barem regains consciousness just as Fumiko abandons Denji and Nayuta, leaving them to fend off an angry mob of civilians. When the mob realizes that a Devil nearby is affecting their minds, Barem crawls over to Nayuta's side and reveals that she is the culprit. Nayuta then mind-controls a nearby civilian to carry Denji to safety while holding off the mob. She pleads for them to stop, emphasizing that she is only a child. However, her pleas are cut short when she finds herself at gunpoint by Barem aiming a gun at her.[18]
Barem attempts to shoot Nayuta, only to discover that the gun is empty. While this happens, a female protestor manages to temporarily stop the angry mob from harming Nayuta. In a desperate attempt, Barem proceeds to turn the gun on himself and begs the mob to kill Nayuta, making it seem like she is controlling him to shoot himself. Believing his words, the furious mob resumes attacking Nayuta.[19]
Aging Devil arc[]

Barem offering Denji some Tamago Nigiri at Sushishi.
A week later, Barem confronts Asa's group at a sushi restaurant, revealing that he knows where Nayuta is. Denji attempts to stab him using a pair of broken chopsticks, but the latter warns him to remain quiet as Public Safety agents have the building surrounded outside. Barem then tells Denji that if he saves them from being killed, then he will let him see Nayuta.[20]
Once Denji complies, Barem informs him of the Chainsaw Devil's true powers and his intentions to make him complete. Denji is confused by Barem's words as they don't make any sense to him. Regardless, Barem tells the head chef to send the next dish down the sushi conveyor. Much to everyone's shock and horror, the dish is revealed to be Nayuta's severed head.[21]
Barem then gives Denji a cold apology, stating that although what he did to Nayuta was cruel, it was necessary to save the world. Before he can eat another sushi dish, Barem is suddenly grabbed by the neck. A enraged Denji is revealed to have pulled his cord as he violently rips Barem's head off his body. At the same time, Pochita takes control of Denji's body, ready to battle Public Safety once again.[22]
