Cremation ( () (そう) Kasō?) is the 147th Chapter of the Chainsaw Man manga.

Summary[]

Barem mockingly applauds Nayuta and confirms her theory, referring to her as "the former Makima." Barem tells Denji that he needs to become "wild" again and that he can't have Denji backing out of being Chainsaw Man. Suddenly, he yells into the air that Chainsaw Man has bestowed a revelation onto him: Nayuta is a witch. He demands the crowd of pseudo-Chainsaw people behind him to kill Nayuta and all of them obey, lunging at her. However, before they can harm her, Quanxi arrives and decapitates all of them instantaneously. Quickly, she picks up Nayuta, Denji, and Fumiko and effortlessly carries them away from Barem.

When Fumiko calls her name out, baffled, she simply responds with "uh-huh." With all three in her arms, Quanxi leaps off the roof of the building and falls to the road below. In mid-air, Quanxi takes a bite from Fumiko's exposed midriff and holds a bit of the blood in her mouth. When she lands on the ground, both her legs instantly break, but she swallows Fumiko's blood and immediately regenerates. The noise alerts a mob of pseudo-Chainsaw people and they charge at the four. Quanxi sets the group down and, once again, effortlessly cuts through the crowd in less than a second. She and Barem stare at each other, with Barem comparing her to "a manga character come to life."

Meanwhile, Denji, Nayuta, and Fumiko watch the ensuing chaos as public and private Devil Hunters battle against the pseudo-Chainsaw people. A group of Public Safety Hunters begin to line up the bodies of transformed Church members onto the road, before creating a bonfire and burning them. A police car nearby announces that a Devil outbreak has occurred and requests anyone who has taken the Devil extermination exam to assist in fighting the pseudo-Chainsaw people. As Quanxi and the group watch the blaze, a nearby Public Safety agent asks if cremation of the bodies is necessary. Another agent replies that anyone transformed can revive with a pull of their ripcord as long as they have blood, and that burning them is the easiest way to ensure a permanent death. Suddenly, an old man nearby points at Denji and begins yelling that he recognizes him as "a Chainsaw Man wannabe."

Trivia[]

  • Barem refers to Nayuta as "a witch that will plunge the world into darkness." While this is a reference to the Control Devil's (possible) role in the Nostradamus prophecy, this is also a reference to Yogen no Nayuta, a one-shot written by Fujimoto and the source of inspiration for the Nayuta in Chainsaw Man. In the one-shot, Nayuta is born as a horned Devil and is prophesied to be a demonic magic user that will one day destroy the world.
  • Barem's comparison of Quanxi to a manga character continues the running joke of characters breaking the fourth wall and referring to themselves/each other as manga characters, such as Kurose mocking Aki for acting like a manga character, Power and Denji comparing themselves to smart manga characters, and a newscaster telling viewers that Chainsaw Man is not the hero of a manga but a real person.
