Always Eat a Hearty Breakfast (
Summary[]
Makima closes the door on Power's body and leads Denji back to her couch. Still in shock, Denji shakily asks Makima if he is in a dream. Makima leans over to rest her head on his lap, before she begins laughing hysterically.
Makima demands Denji take off his shirt. Hesitating, she reminds him of his subservience, and he proceeds. Lying back down on his lap, she begins to speak, playing with Denji's cord as she does. She explains that Denji's promise to Pochita- to achieve a normal life- was in fact a contract. Desiring to break the contract by making it so Denji could never enjoy a normal life, Makima explains she set about giving him everything he wanted before snatching it away. She explains that by giving him food; a job; and a family through Aki and Power; she would allow him to attain a new level of normalcy before destroying it. She then informs him that any happiness of normalcy he experiences from then on will be orchestrated by her, with the express purpose of eventually destroying it. When Denji asks why, she responds that "The Time Has Come For You To Atone For Your Sins".
Elaborating, Makima explains that she looked into Denji's past and saw his repressed memories: the ones hidden behind the door that Pochita ordered him not to open. She explains that Denji hid the truth from himself in order to be able to live a normal life: The fact that he murdered his father. She goes on further, stating that Denji killed his abusive and alcoholic father in self-defense, and that the claims of suicide were merely created by the mafia so Denji would inherit his debts.
Makima tells Denji that by opening the door and accepting his past, he had accepted that he was unworthy of a normal, happy life. She reminds him that the same occurred with Aki and Power: Though Denji has been warned not to, and other options were available, he ultimately opened the door and accepted their deaths. Makima asks Denji whether he believes he deserves a normal life, as a dejected child-like Denji sadly responds "Nuh-Uh".
The next morning, Makima calmly eats breakfast, as Denji lies motionless on her couch.
