The Four Horsemen (4
Makima, revealed to be Control,[2] was the first Horseman to appear, and she made reference to the other three well before any of them made their debut.[3][1] The four are some of the most prominent Devils featured in the Chainsaw Man manga, with Makima being the main antagonist of the Public Safety Saga while the other three (along with Nayuta, Makima's reincarnation) are among the main characters featured in Part 2, the Academy Saga; among the four, Yoru stands as the second saga's main antagonist.
Overview[]
The Horsemen are four particularly powerful Devils who take on the form of human females and consider themselves "sisters" (
Together, the sisters are presumably known to have engaged in a particularly brutal battle in Hell against the Devil most feared by other Devils: "Chainsaw Man".[12][13][14][15][16] The Horsemen seem to be the only entities in the world (Devil or otherwise) who still remember the names of the Devils devoured by Chainsaw Man, such as the Nuclear Weapons Devil, the World War II Devil, the Nazi Devil, and others. However, it is unclear how far these memories go: Makima, the Control Devil's previous incarnation, could remember the names of devoured Devils but admitted that she could not recall them beyond the sight of them fighting Chainsaw, and that even those memories were starting to fade;[17][13] the next incarnation, Nayuta, appears to bear no memories from her predecessor's life.
Intergroup Relations & Ambitions[]
Despite their past collaboration in fighting Chainsaw Man, the Horsemen sisters are not a cohesive unit, each member pursuing different goals and agendas that tend to clash, yet which as a commonality involve Chainsaw Man in one way or another:
- Makima, the former Control Devil, posed as a human Devil Contractor working for Japan's Devil Hunter organization, intending (after being the first to find Pochita) to bring the Chainsaw Devil under her control in order to wipe out her sisters, to get rid of their very concepts and (supposedly) create a better world;[18] Makima went as far as to claim that she was a fan of Chainsaw Man's due to his incredible power and chaotic violence, to the point that she would not have minded being devoured by him herself.[19][20][21]
- Nayuta, Makima's reincarnation, was taken in by Denji (Pochita's current host) and did not care to involve herself with her sisters' plans, preferring to study like a human child while living with Denji (and also admiring Chainsaw Man, wanting to see him in action as a Devil Hunter).[22][23] However, Nayuta did, at some point, express a desire to join the Devils' side alongside Denji, finding human society fun yet suffocating due to its rules, though Denji was able to convince her not to.[24]
- Yoru, the War Devil, originally intended to find Pochita and battle him again so as to slay him, in a revenge plot for him eating part of her (plus other Devils that contributed to War's power, like the WWII and Nuclear Weapons Devils),[13][14][15][25][16] while avoiding her sisters (or at least the Death Devil as Fami) in the process.[26] Yoru has since come around to working alongside Denji and Chainsaw Man, in order to take on Death.[27]
- The Death Devil, assuming the name of Fami, has seemingly dedicated herself to opposing the apocalypse prophesized by Nostradamus and, by her own word, save humanity from herself. Though her true goals are a mystery, she has operated with the objective of wanting to prevent the apocalypse by ending her own life and enslaving her younger sister War to aid her in this endeavor (specifically wanting to empower both War and the Chainsaw Devil to be able to successfully kill her). Death Devil at different points tried recruiting both Yoru (War) and Nayuta (Control) for her plot.[28][29][30]
- The real Fami, or the Famine Devil's current agenda is to save humanity through death, believing that death is salvation.[31] If (and how) Chainsaw Man would be involved in Fami’s ambitions is unknown, though the correlation may just lie in her encounter with the Fake Chainsaw Man.
Personalities[]
The Horsemen stand out among Devils not only for their scheming tendencies (especially in the case of Control and Death) but also their humanlike dispositions, propensity to pose as humans, and willingness to integrate into human society (and collaborate with humans, including their anti-Devil factions) in favor of their goals.[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39][40][41] The Horsemen all have distinct personalities, notably maintaining a veneer of amiability towards humans despite ultimately being extremely selfish and looking down on humanity.
Makima heavily involved herself in Japan's Government's Agency Public Safety and, pretending to be human, almost always maintained an aura of compassion and politeness in front of people — that is, until she began betraying her closest subordinates in pursuit of her secret ambitions, at which point she revealed herself to be callous, domineering, and Machiavellian as befitting "Control" (not to mention the countless human lives that she was willing to sacrifice). Makima did mention to Kishibe that she was aiming to kill her sisters to better the world for humanity, though given her actions, the truthfulness of this statement might be called into question.[42][43][44][45][46][47] Makima was willing to utterly break Denji's spirit to make the boy her obedient slave, telling him that he ought not need to think for himself,[48][49] and later openly stated that she sees humans the same way they see dogs.[50]
Nayuta, the Control Devil's next incarnation, has several childlike tendencies matching her current form, in terms of behavior and speech, though she has also exhibited domineering tendencies and can be rather perceptive.[51][52][53][30] Though seeming less overtly extreme in her attitudes towards humanity, Nayuta has still come to view Denji as her property[54] and has, ultimately, admitted that she would not mind killing humans, believing that killing was fine for any Devil to do since it comes naturally to them and makes them feel alive. She even suggested that Denji join the Devils' side together with her, noting that, while human culture was fun, the rules that humans impose are suffocating and would disappear if Devils instead ruled over humanity; Denji was able to convince her not to do so or kill any humans, however.[24]
War is loud, touchy, immature, belligerent, and desires war to engulf the world so as to recover her original strength and not be forgotten by humans.[55][56][57][58][59][16] By contrast, the Death Devil is very calm, mannered, and polite to everyone, but unlike Control she does not bother to hide her ill intentions for Asa Mitaka. Additionally, though claiming to want to save humanity from extinction, she appears consequentialist (like Makima) in so far as she is willing to wreak global havoc to do so and sacrifice countless lives;[33][35][60][28][61] Death Devil also has (like Makima) been willing to heavily involve herself with humans to pursue her agenda, chiefly by forming the Chainsaw Man Church.[38][39][40]
From what has been seen so far, Famine appears to have a meek and taciturn demeanour, but also expresses a high opinion of herself as well as her powers, & wishes to use them to “save” humanity from their suffering via death out of pity for them.
None of the Horsemen seem to have the common Devil desire for human flesh, eating human food instead. Death Devil, likely as a ruse to maintain the thematic appearance of Fami, appears to be partial to fast food[62] and has expressly named Chinese food and pizza as good enough reasons for why human civilization should be preserved, which Nayuta agreed with.[62] The sisters also seem to have an affinity for bread.[63][64]
As a shared quirk, the Four Horsemen are face-blind, with Death Devil stating that "we sisters have no interest in faces-human or devil".[8] Well before revealing her true nature, Makima hinted at the fact that instead of discerning faces, she went by smell,[65][66] something later confirmed by Denji, who noted that Makima never actually remembered peoples' faces, including his.[67] Nayuta, in turn, seems to have inherited Makima's acute sense of smell.[68][69] Yoru likewise noted that she had not recognized "Fami" due to it being too long since she last saw her (or possibly due to her actually being Death),[6] and both she and Death (like Makima) are apparently unable to discern Denji-as-Chainsaw Man from Pochita (in his true form) by anything besides color, despite them looking very different.[8] Whether all the four sisters perceive others via scent is unknown.
Appearances[]
All Four Horsemen are female, appearing as young women and/or girls.[4][5][6][7][8][9][41]
Though they differ from another appearance-wise and may change their shape upon reincarnating, they (at least while in the Human World) look fully human to a degree rarely seen with full-fledged Devils, to the point of being able to pass themselves off as humans without being found out and seamlessly integrate into society. Whether the Horsemen's original forms in Hell are the same degree of humanlike is unconfirmed. Yoru the War Devil was seen taking the shape of a small, dark potoo bird while in her weakened state (not unlike Pochita's weakened dog form),[70] before subsequently possessing the body of a teenage girl (and being distinguished in said body by her ringed eyes and facial scars that manifest whenever she is in control).[71]
All Four Horsemen have uniquely colored eyes whose irides are split by concentric rings.
Power[]
The Four Horsemen embody some concepts humanity greatly fears and thus are extremely powerful. The only Devils known match and/or surpass them in power are Chainsaw Man (whom the four brutally fought in the past),[12] "Primal Fear" Devils,[72] and perhaps the Gun Devil at the very height of its power.[73][74] Of the four, only Death herself — the eldest and strongest Horseman — is confirmed to be a Devil of (or beyond) "Primal Fear" status as the "Ultimate Terror",[75] and her younger sisters do not seem to command that same level of fear; the Eternity Devil, for instance, did not hesitate to curse out Death when she went against their deal,[76] and the Aging Devil (a Primal Fear) referred to both the Chainsaw and War Devils as too immature to talk to it;[77] by contrast, it is noted that Death commands enough respect that all the high-ranking Devils will pay court to her when she arrives.[78] The Four Horsemen are the only Devils, besides the Hybrids to be somewhat partially immune to Chainsaw Man's Devil Erasure Ability. While demonstrated only by Makima and Yoru thus far, Makima being able to name all the Devils that are erased, although beginning to forget their names, she remembers the Devils corresponding to the concepts fighting with Chainsaw Man "as clear as day"[17], and Yoru noticing immediately when the Ear Devil got erased temporarily, saying that "something disappeared".[79]
Makima, the first Horseman to appear, was also the first to showcase her abilities, proving to be an immensely strong Devil who was feared the world over, by humans and Devils alike, and whom various nations on Earth had all but given up opposing.[80] With sufficient preparation (that is, after subjugating enough Devils) Makima was able to overpower the Gun Devil at its strongest (using her underlings Contracts), while it was empowered by a Contract affording it one year of lifespan from every American; she did fail to deal a killing blow and prevent the Gun Devil's escape, however.[73][74] Using her "Control" power to force various humans, Devils, and Fiends into Contracts, Makima was able to acquire a wealth of abilities; her Contract with the Japanese Prime Minister also made her somewhat nigh-unkillable (but not equivalent to Primal Fears extent), as any physical harm done unto her was transferred to random Japanese citizens; hence, she had a near-limitless stock of extra lives.[47] Consequently, Makima proved herself able to pressure and even defeat Chainsaw Man, though only after the latter's drastic weakening due to humans' declining fear of him.[81][82][83][84] Makima also managed to somewhat oppose the primordial Darkness Devil, being able to slightly injure and draw blood from the latter, though at the cost of her arm and while merely trying to retrieve her allies from Hell despite failing against it.[72] Well after Makima's downfall, Barem Bridge, a former subject of Makima, noted that if she were still alive, she may have been able to defeat the Death Devil.[85]
Makima's reincarnation Nayuta, though not yet as powerful, probably because she was not as high in ranks as Makima by through government, is shown to have a complete grasp on utilizing her "Control" powers. Although she can only shoot out three chains at once, Nayuta is capable of commanding those under her control with great expertise, even being able to speak right through them.[86][87] Her prowess is valuable enough for her eldest sister Death to try and recruit her for her cause.[88][89]
The War Devil Yoru, though having the potential to be incredibly powerful in her own right, has been drastically weakened due to her past battle with Pochita (who ate a piece of her) and the world having forgotten war's terrors since WWII.[15] Not only is Yoru subject to unique limitations while possessing Asa's body, such as being unable to take her over when Asa is stricken with fear,[90][91] she originally also lacks raw power. Since the strength of her weapons scales to the amount of guilt that Asa feels about creating them,[92] Yoru claims that only Asa can create strong weapons.[93] When faced with the primal Falling Devil, Yoru (unlike Makima against Darkness) felt that she had no chance in her current state, opting to flee on sight.[94] Still, Death believes that, if humanity's collective fear of war is heightened to its max, Yoru (together with Pochita) could be able to stand up to the Death Devil herself,[75] and indeed, after humanity's fear of war was heightened due to the Chainsaw Man Church's machinations, Yoru's power grew dramatically.[95] Yoru's power reaches its height after she transforms the Tank Devil and Gun Devil into gauntlets and replacement arms, allowing her to create a "Gun Goddess" out of the Statue of Liberty and launch highly destructive bullets wherever she points, across intercontinental distances. She quickly and effortlessly defeats a full-powered Chainsaw Man wielding her new powers, each shot repelling him and tearing off limbs or sections of his body. Capable of fully incapacitating him, Yoru may have come close to successfully killing Chainsaw Man were it not for the Aging Devil's intervention.[96][97][98][99]
As revealed by Nayuta, the Death Devil (the eldest Horseman sister) is in fact the so-called "Great King of Terror" whose name is feared most of all. Hence, Death is the strongest Devil in existence whose advent on Earth is foretold as part of Nostradamus' Prophecy, ushering in the apocalypse that would end humanity. Believing this to be true regardless of her own will and compassion for humanity, Death herself had a plan involving inducing global chaos, specifically directed at reigniting humanity's collective fear of War and Chainsaw Man in order for them to overpower her and prevent the Prophecy.[100][28][75] Though having yet to be seen in a direct combat scenario, she is shown to be very powerful befitting of her status, and exceedingly resourceful in much the same way that Makima was. Her ability to enslave any living thing she has killed was shown to work even on a fellow Primal Fear Devil, as she was able to force the Falling Devil to do her bidding and summon her from Hell to Earth.[101] As noted by Barem Bridge, Death has several extremely valuable Devils as her pawns:[102] from the aforementioned Falling Devil to the Eternity Devil,[76] to the enigmatic Fire Devil.[102] She's also shown to survive mortal wounds, showcasing that she failed to die even after removing all of her internal organs.
While the extent of her true power is unknown, the real Fami has displayed at least the ability to siphon the life force of living beings she comes in physical contact with to mend her own wounds, causing them to become rapidly malnourished. To a degree not demonstrated by her sisters except Death, she's able to survive extreme mortal injuries seemingly without any contracts that would transfer them to another person; She was sliced into pieces by the Fake Chainsaw Man and continued speaking as a severed head with no apparent pain. Despite this, Fami is evidently the least threatening of the Horsemen in terms of destructive power at the time of her appearance, using seemingly plain hand-to-hand combat skills to fight and throwing rocks at civilians to get them to "fear" her. Her weakness is such that she herself is repeatedly shocked at the ease of which the Fake Chainsaw Man dismembers her multiple times.
Abilities[]
As with most Devils, the Four Horsemen are endowed with abilities that correspond to their embodied concept. Coincidentally, most Horsemen’s (besides seemingly Famine) signature power manifests as the ability to exert control over both living and nonliving targets in one way or another, with different conditions attached:
- The Control Devil's core ability is to control whom or what she deems inferior, with Makima stating "I have the power to control those I consider to be of lesser rank than myself" (i.e., weaker than her in ranks).[103] Her potential targets range from humans to small animals, to Devils, to Fiends, to Hybrids. Even precise control over someone's brain, including manipulating memories and perception, is possible for the Control Devil.[104][105][106]
- The War Devil can turn anything she believes is "hers" (her property) into her weapons, from objects to lifeforms. This ability, when channeled through Asa Mitaka, depends on guilt: the more guilt Asa feels about creating a weapon, the stronger it will be,[107][92][108][109][110][111] meaning that while Yoru possesses Asa, only Asa can create strong weapons.[93] In this context, the concept of Asa's ownership is bound only by her own perception no matter how illogical.[110]
- The Death Devil, impersonating the Famine Devil, initially claimed that she can turn those who are "hungry" into her "pawns" and have them do her bidding,[112] even a fellow Primal Fear Devil as seen with Falling.[101] However, this was simply a purposefully misleading description of her own powers; The Death Devil's actual ability is the power to enslave any living being she has killed. The only method of her doing so shown so far involves her 'eating' her victims alive via a summoned murder of crows, before regurgitating them from own her mouth as shrunken effigies. She can then revive them by invoking their names and later revert them back to an effigy state accordingly. While this method is not a hard requirement as noted by Falling Devil, Death states that "meat tastes best fresh" and "savouring lives as much as possible is good manners", suggesting she simply does it both out of courtesy and as a preference.
- The Famine Devil can absorb the life force of living creatures she’s in physical contact with and use it to regenerate and heal her wounds, which causes her victims to instantly become extremely malnourished.[113][114]
Plot[]
History[]
Together, the Horsemen sisters are known to have engaged in a particularly brutal battle in Hell against the Devil feared most by other Devils: "Chainsaw Man" (aka Pochita). For exactly how long is not revealed, although going by Yoru's words, it may have been for at least 50+ years since she mentioned how she was weakened by the absence of wars since WWII, following her fight with Pochita.[12][13][14][15][16] However, in the midst of their final confrontation in Hell, Pochita mysteriously vanished. Despite searches conducted by the Control Devil, Pochita could not be found. Unbeknownst to the Four Horsemen, this was because Pochita had changed forms on the verge of death and escaped to Earth;[1] this is when Denji and an injured Pochita met.[115]
Sometime after this battle, the Horsemen arrived on Earth as well, apparently parting ways. The Control Devil assumed the identity of a human, "Makima", who became the head of Special Division 4 of Japan's Public Safety.[32]
Public Safety Saga[]
Gun Devil arc[]
Makima's status as the Control Devil is revealed during her fight against the Gun Devil.[2]
Control Devil arc[]
Makima reveals the existence of the Four Horsemen amid her presumed fight against Chainsaw Man, describing how she, the other three Horsemen, and the Weapon Devils fought against Pochita in Hell until the battle abruptly ended, when Pochita vanished before their eyes. With the Weapon Hybrids present, she announces that the interrupted battle can finally be brought to an end, as she orders the Hybrids to attack Chainsaw Man.[116]
After seemingly succeeding at defeating Chainsaw Man and seizing control over him, Makima is suddenly sliced open by Denji with a chainsaw. Through a loophole, Denji renders the Devil Contract Makima had with the Prime Minister of Japan that gave her somewhat nigh-immortality null and kills her by eating her entire body making her become one with him.[117]
The Control Devil is soon reincarnated as Nayuta, a young girl from China. Kishibe, who discovered her, brought her to Japan where he tasks Denji with taking the girl in and raise her right, so as to prevent the rise of another Makima by preventing her fall under Public Safety's influence.[118]
Academy Saga[]
Justice Devil arc[]
Quite some time after Makima's downfall, the War Devil — weakened from her battle against Pochita and reduced to a diminutive, potoo-like form — appears in front of a dying Asa Mitaka, after the girl is murdered by her jealous classmate out of the latter's belief that it would secure her the affections of their teacher, Mr. Tanaka. The War Devil offers to save Asa's life, in exchange for control over her body. Mitaka takes this opportunity, allowing the War Devil to assume control of her body. The War Devil immediately slaughters Asa's murderer as well as her teacher. Seeing a Chainsaw Man poster nearby, the War Devil vows to make Chainsaw Man "vomit nuclear weapons back up".[119] War reveals that, having left Asa's brain intact, the latter's self has been preserved, causing the two to share one body,[120] and consequently names herself "Yoru" (meaning "Night" in contrast to Asa's name, which means "Morning").[121]
Shortly after, a human-like Devil claiming to be the Famine Devil, nicknaming herself "Fami", is revealed to have assumed the identity of a high school student at Fourth East, as a member of the school's Devil Hunter Club.[33][34][35][36]
Dating Denji arc[]
"Fami" reappears following Yuko's death, along with the rest of the Devil Hunter Club.[122] She later meets Asa again at the Tanashi Aquarium, introducing herself as the "Famine Devil" and revealing that she cannot turn Denji into a weapon until she loses her morality before suddenly disappearing and trapping the two inside. While doing this, Fami also warps Yoru away in the process.[123] While trapped inside the aquarium, Yoshida asks Denji if "Chainsaw Man could eat the Death Devil for us".[124]
Soon after Asa and the others successfully break free from the Eternity Devil's power and Yoru defeats it, "Fami" is seen standing on top of a building pondering about her failed plan. She then notices Hirofumi Yoshida looking directly at her, smirking, as they both engage in a staredown.[125]
Falling Devil arc[]
Hirofumi Yoshida reveals the "Prophecy of Nostradamus" that foresees a coming apocalypse, during which the so-called "Great King of Terror" is to descend on Earth to usher in the end of the age of humans and the dawn of one where Devils rule[100][28] (later revealed to, in fact, refer to the coming of the Death Devil).[75] The Horsemen's attitudes towards said prophecy are shown to vary — with "Famine" actively working against it and wishing to preserve humanity, Control seeming disinterested,[23] and War having not yet actively involved herself in any scheme regarding it.
When the primordial "Falling Devil" arrives from Hell to go after Asa and Yoru, the latter correctly guesses that "Fami" is involved. Indeed, "Fami" herself eventually reveals that she intended for the Falling Devil to feed Asa and Yoru to the Justice Devil and have her sister starved in its belly so that she may become "Fami's" pawn, to aid in the latter's plot to prevent Nostradamus' Prophecy. Nayuta declines "Fami's" request to work with her.[126][127]
Chainsaw Man Church arc[]
After her attempts to starve the War Devil failed, "Fami" with the help of Haruka Iseumi and Barem Bridge founds the Chainsaw Man Church, which quickly grows into a powerful organization with tens of thousands of members, frequent TV appearances, and political donations. Following a tense conversation, "Fami" manages to recruit her Horseman sister Yoru and Asa into the church, turning them both into a national celebrity to serve as a public face for the church. Besides the War Devil, the church also counts various Weapon Hybrids among its ranks.[38][128][39][129][130][131][132][133]
It is later revealed that "Fami", thanks to her many Devil connections, was able to make an estimated 350,000 Chainsaw Man Church followers worldwide enter Contracts with the Fire Devil, transforming them into pseudo-Devils resembling Chainsaw Man to begin inciting global chaos. This, per the plan of "Fami" and Barem Bridge, is for the purpose of raising humanity's collective fear of both the Chainsaw Man and War, to make both Devils strong enough to stand up to the "Great King of Terror" — Death — whose arrival on Earth (per Nostradamus' Prophecy) is fortold to happen in six months' time, and which "Fami" and Barem aim to prevent in order to save the human race.[134] The effects of the global mayhem on War are swift to follow, causing War's power to drastically increase.[95]
Barem later ponders how, since Nayuta cannot take control of him, it might be due to either him still being under Makima's rule or his heart still belonging to her, and goes on to say that if Makima was still alive, she could have defeated the Death Devil and brought upon a controlled, peaceful world.[85]
Aging Devil arc[]
At a sushi restaurant, Barem succeeds in breaking Denji by showing him Nayuta's decapitated head, forcing Pochita to take control of his body. Pochita continues his murder spree against Public Safety, who try to feed him the Aging Devil to evolve mankind for them to have a standing chance against the Prophecy, according to Fumiko Mifune[135], which ultimately fails.
Current arc[]
In the aftermath of the Aging Devil's defeat, the War Devil is revealed to be aware of the Death Devil's impending arrival, and intends on confronting her eldest sister so that she enact her own horrific plans for humanity once she is dealt with.[136][137] The true Famine Devil, also nicknamed Fami, is later revealed to be attending Fourth East High as a new transfer student with plans of "saving" humanity by setting them "free" through death itself.[138][139] Assaulted by a Fake Chainsaw Man, she is quickly defeated and left at his mercy before "Fami", revealing herself to be none other than the Death Devil, intervenes with assistance from the returning Falling Devil.
The Death Devil turns both of them into pawns for a mission of plunging humanity into an era of terror. Ultimately, the Fake Chainsaw Man and the Falling Devil are defeated by Denji and Yoru, while the latter gains an immense boost to her power as nuclear weapons are reinvented. The Death Devil and the Famine Devil bring Denji to an undisclosed classroom where the Death Devil explains to him that she subverted the Prophecy into a more catastrophic future, where Yoru got more powerful than expected and wants to enact World War II, with her goal of turning Denji into a weapon and erasing the Death Devil from existence.[140] Later, while Death Devil and Famine Devil rest the former appears to notice Yoshida approaching the school grounds where, after sharing a meal with Denji, reveals he was sent as a switch triggering an explosion.[141]
Barem then appears and uses a flamethrower to burn Yoshida's corpse, causing Pochita to emerge from Denji's body and eat Barem whole. Death Devil and Famine Devil then approach Pochita, where Famine expresses relief they weren't killed by him, while Death answers that he must be wary of the incoming Devil before them, as the doors from Hell appear in the sky above the destroyed Fourth East High School.[142] The threat reveals herself to be Yoru, as she descends from the doors and greets her sisters. The Death Devil attempts to negotiate with Yoru, asking that she stay in Hell forever and in return she will allow herself to be transformed into a weapon alongside Famine and Pochita.
While Famine Devil is against this, Yoru refuses and reveals she has Death's friends held captive and threatens to have them killed if Death tries to use her powers to kill her first. Yoru then declares War with Pochita under the terms that the winner can take control of the world, leading to the two fighting, while Famine Devil and Death Devil stand back and watch on.[143] In the mist of the battle, Pochita refuses to kill Yoru and instead consumes the Death Devil, erasing her from existence. - The Four Horsemen are based, in name and concept, on the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (Japanese:
黙 示 録 の四 騎 士 Mokushiroku no Yonkishi?) from Christian eschatology, appearing in John's Book of Revelation (6:1–8) of the New Testament. Per some interpretations, they are thought to be referenced in the Old Testament's prophetic Book of Zechariah and in Ezekiel.- Per the scripture, these four figures are to set a divine end-time upon the world as harbingers of the Last Judgment: they appear with the opening of the first four of God's Seven Seals to release the Apocalypse, as God's punishment. They are usually interpreted by modern scholarship as Conquest (the White Rider), War (the Red Rider), Famine (the Black Rider), and finally Death (the Pale Rider, who is the only one explicitly named in the Revelation).
- The Horsemen's order of appearance in the scripture mirrors the order of the corresponding Devils' appearance in Chainsaw Man: first shown was the Control Devil (Conquest), followed by War and then Famine, with Death being the last to appear. Ironically, their ages appear to be the inverse, with Death being stated to be the eldest, followed by Fami, then Yoru and Nayuta being the youngest.
- Under one interpretation that has appeared since the early 20th century (esp. prevalent in modern pop-culture references to the Four Horsemen), the first Rider is called Pestilence instead of Conquest — associated with infectious disease and plague. While the exact origin of this interpretation is unknown, some assume a reason to be that scholars found Conquest and War to be too similar/overlap. Coincidentally, the White Rider is described as carrying bow; bows and arrows have been associated with disease since antiquity, with arrows thought of as carriers thereof (esp. the plague) due to oft being laced with poison.
- While Makima can control whichever creature she deems inferior to herself, like animals,[146] she has been shown to teleport herself by specifically using rats as a medium,[147] which are creatures prominently associated with disease.
- The term "Horseman" is traditionally rendered as Kishi (騎士?) in Japanese bible translations, the gender-neutral term for "Knight".
- Before her explicit reveal as one of the Four Horsemen, Makima was already hinted at being one due to her Devil title matching the name of the biblical "Conquest" Rider: the word "Conquest" is rendered as Shihai (
支 配 ? lit. "Rule/Domination/Control") in Japanese.

- The ringed eye design is not solely indicative of the Horsemen, however: the Fox Devil and Future Devil are prime examples of other Devils having such an eye design.
- The Four Horsemen's inability to recognize people by their faces might reference prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness: a cognitive disorder of face perception in which the ability to recognize familiar faces is impaired. Still, based on the words of the Death Devil, it appears that the Horsemen simply do not care for faces,[8] not that they are absolutely incapable of recognizing them.
