"You complain, you aren't a team player... and you fail to come through in the clutch. I expected better from you."

Haruka Iseumi ( () () (うみ) ハルカ Iseumi Haruka?) is a supporting character in the Academy Saga. He is a student at Fourth East High School, where he is the president of the Devil Hunter Club and student council. He claimed to be Chainsaw Man but in actuality, he is an obsessed fan of Chainsaw Man. He then held a brief tenure as the public leader of the Chainsaw Man Church, though this backfired and he became villainized across the country.

Appearance[]

Haruka is a slim young man who wears a bandana, an all-black uniform, and a military cap with a symbol. He has black hair combed to the side of his face. He has a pull cord in his chest identical to that of Pochita's in Denji's chest, later revealed to be a surgical implant.

Personality[]

Haruka seems to be benevolent and prideful on a surface level; he has a habit of constantly introducing himself in an extravagant manner and he holds his position as president of both the student council and the Devil Hunter Club in high regard. As of such, he tends to lead those around him, instructing others on how to handle a situation, utilizing their skillset to their advantage.

However, he can also be very demeaning to those he views as having no worth to the club, such as when he berates Asa for accidentally destroying her phone when she tried to help out. It's also shown that he can be fairly manipulative, lying to others that he is indeed the real Chainsaw Man, likely in order to boost his own popularity. However, when cornered in the aquarium he easily admits that his ripcord is simply a surgical implant and reveals himself to simply be a massive fan of the Chainsaw Man. Haruka doesn't seem exceptionally brave. When cornered in the aquarium he breaks down screaming for Chainsaw Man to save him, he is later also shown to be easily intimidated by others.[1]

His devotion to Chainsaw Man is shown to be the main cause as to why he co-lead the Chainsaw Man Church as its "face," as he didn't have the same ulterior motives held by Barem and Fami. In fact, their plan involving the Fire Devil is shown to take a mental toll on him, and he swears to never get involved with Fami or her plans ever again. However, his devotion to Chainsaw Man immediately lead to him turning back on this vow and he decides to venture further into danger just for the chance of meeting him.

Plot[]

Dating Denji arc[]

Haruka shows his rip cord

Haruka shows off his pull-cord to Asa and Yoru.

The day after Yuko's attack on the school, he introduces himself to Asa Mitaka. He tells Asa that she is accepted into the Devil Hunter Club. Yoru takes over and asks Haruka if he knows Chainsaw Man's identity. Haruka reveals a pull-cord sticking out of his chest; believing he is Chainsaw Man, Yoru walks away.[2]

At the aquarium, Denji and Asa ran into members of the Devil Hunter Club including Haruka, Seigi, and Nobana Higashiyama, who were patrolling the Tanashi Aquarium for Devils.

Devil Hunter Club Trio at the aquarium

Haruka, Nobana, and Seigi show up at Tanashi Aquarium.

Asa ponders whether she should turn Denji into a weapon or kill Haruka, who she believes is Chainsaw Man. They are able to exploit the endless confines of the aquarium by obtaining water from repeating rooms and fish to eat. Asa realizes she still has her mother's phone, and tries to get a cellular reception, but breaks the phone after she trips and falls.[3]

As Asa lays on the floor, staring into space, Haruka tells her that if she didn't broken her mother's cellphone when she tripped, the others would've had the ability to escape the aquarium. Feeling insulted, she reminds Haruka that he claimed to be Chainsaw Man and that he should be doing something to help.

Haruka's meltdown

Haruka experiencing a mental breakdown as he begs Chainsaw Man to save him.

Haruka becomes confused, asking what she's talking about, to which she reminds him about the starter on his chest. Haruka reveals that the starter on his chest is actually a surgical implant, and that he got it because he's just a massive fan. Asa, in disbelief, asks him to confirm that he isn't the actual Chainsaw man, to which Haruka breaks down laughing, begging Chainsaw Man to save him, much to Asa's horror.[4]

After Asa destroys the aquarium and Yoru defeats the Eternity Devil who had trapped them there, the Devil Hunter Club members are stunned, with Haruka theorizing aloud as to who Asa truly is.[5] Later a nearby Haruka is shown spying on Denji and Asa from a distance, likely still curious about Asa's powers and fully believing Denji's words that Asa could die if Denji took her to his home.[6]

Chainsaw Man Church arc[]

During the aftermath of the Falling Devil's attack, Haruka appears on a public talk show for promoting the Chainsaw Man Church, in which the latter is humiliated on live television. He later meets up with Fami in the backstage, complaining about how he was humiliated publically. Fami informs him that ridicule was the whole point and tells him not to think about it.

Haruka on broadcast

Haruka promoting the Chainsaw Man Church on live broadcast under Fami's orders.

A mysterious figure appears behind Haruka, telling him to listen to what Fami says. The mysterious figure tells Haruka that his role is to operate as the "face" of the Chainsaw Man Church while Fami is to operate as the "brains".[7] He later appears on another broadcast session, in which he reveals an imposter Chainsaw Man and his intentions for the church.[8]

On the day Public Safety raids the Chainsaw Man Church's forces, Haruka is informed by the elderly cult leader to send all combat-trained followers to meet outside the prayer room. Confused by this, Haruka tries to get the man to explain what's happening, only for him to say that he doesn't know a thing, and he knows Haruka doesn't know a thing about it as well.[9]

Current arc[]

Haruka, Nobana, and Seigi are freed from their cells

Haruka, Nobana, and Seigi are freed from captivity by Asa and Fami.

A week after the recent ongoing Fire Devil attacks, Haruka and the other Chainsaw Man Church leaders were captured and locked up within the Tokyo Devil Detention Center by Public Safety.[10] Once Asa and Fami manage to disarm a group of Public Safety guards with help from the Guillotine Devil, Haruka is freed alongside Nobana and Seigi.

Knowing how dangerous Fami is, Haruka tells her to stay away from his group as their family's lives have been ruined thanks to her machinations. It is also revealed that anyone associated with the church are now placed on the country's most wanted list. However, the trio decide to accompany Fami's group once Asa informs them that she and Fami plan to rescue Chainsaw Man, who is held captive.[11]

The group eventually runs into a Public Safety grunt who questions them the origins of the Pseudo-Chainsaw People locked inside a nearby room. Haruka yells at Nobana to step away from the man. However, Yoru deduces that the grunt was actually distracting them as Katana Man and the Nail Fiend arrive to stop Fami's group from proceeding any further.[12]

Haruka discovers Denji's disembodied head

Haruka discovers that his idol was Denji all along.

Asa manages to convince both Katana Man and the Nail Fiend to form a truce as both groups want to confront Chainsaw Man, which greatly distresses Haruka. This also causes the rogue duo to betray Public Safety in the process.[13] The group eventually reaches Chainsaw Man's location, where the surgeons dismembering revealed they already placed his parts in several boxes.

Yoru orders the Devil Hunter Club trio and Fami to reassemble Chainsaw Man as she wants him in perfect condition for their rematch. However, Haruka discovers Chainsaw Man's disembodied head, belonging to none other than Denji. He shows Denji's head to the others, shocking Asa as she realizes that Denji and Chainsaw Man are the same person. The ragtag group are then interupted by the arrival of Quanxi, who was ordered to kill the intruders by the scarred Special Division 7 agent.[14]
